Ross Naylor, left, a descendant of Joseph Martin, a descendant of Zed Martin, looks at the document officially proclaiming the Fourth of July this year as Zed Martin Founder’s Day, joined by Betty Soper, secretary of the Platte County Historical Society, and Platte City Mayor Truman V. Glenn, who has just made the proclamation. Naylor has a brother and a sister still living, Ina Naylor McElhiner of Platte City and Alva Naylor of Shawnee Mission, Kan. All descendants of the three Martin brothers are invited to attend the Zed Martin Day activities and sit in a special section during the evening activities.
A Demolition Derby will be a part of the 118th annual Platte County Fair, to be held July 22-25 at Tracy. The derby is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23. Ron Pine, derby chairman, promises the usual motor mayhem, smashes and thrills and maybe a little comedy with a possible appearance of that queen of the car-smashing set, Cecilia Boobalinsky, a female impersonator with “no known address.”
Elizabeth Ann Welch and Robert Alan Whitters exchanged wedding vows during a ceremony on Saturday, June 6, at the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial Chapel in Quantico, Va. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul R. Whitters, Brookfield Center, Conn., formerly of Platte City.
