Air bags and seat belts played a big part in avoiding a fatality in a crash involving a law enforcement officer last week. Matthew C. Dodson, 23, a deputy for the Platte County Sheriff’s Department, was seriously injured in a head-on collision Thursday night on Hwy. 45, a mile north of Beverly. Authorities say a southbound Grand Prix driven by Jeremy Webb, 17, of Weston crossed into the southbound lane and struck Dodson’s Crown Victoria patrol car head-on. Both Dodson and Webb were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated by West Platte Fire and Central Platte Fire Departments. Both were airlifted to area hospitals, reports Major Greg Crader with the Platte County Sheriff’s Department.

A 12-classroom addition to the high school at Dearborn was easily approved by voters in the North Platte R-1 School District Tuesday. The issue, which needed two thirds majority approval, was okayed by around 80% of voters. Superintendent Dr. Francis Moran said since the estimated $2.6 million project was approved on the first try, school officials may be able to move up completion time and have the addition open for the 1997-98 school year.
