It will be back again next year. Although exact plans won’t be in place until after the district’s June or July school board meetings, North Platte Superintendent Jeff Sumy said that the school plans to continue next year with its random drug testing of high school students who either participate in extracurricular activities or use the school’s parking lot.

Laughter and remember were big parts of last week’s celebration at North Platte Elementary as Chris Roper and the Living History volunteers were honored for 20 years of service. Chris, the group’s founder, downplayed her leadership role, but her appreciative fans honored her years of inspiration and hard work with a gift of a hammered dulcimer.

Captain Kent Pine of the Central Platte Fire Department remains hospitalized, Chief Larry Bigus is now home. That’s the medical update on the two most seriously injured of the five firefighters hurt in the head-on crash of two Central Platte pumper trucks on May 9. Pine suffered two broken legs and has undergone multiple surgeries. Bigus was released from the hospital on Friday, May 20. He suffered multiple broken ribs and bruised lungs. The two pumpers collided on HH Hwy. about two miles east of Platte City around 4:10 a.m. on May 9. Pine and Bigus were the drivers of the trucks, which were responding to a report of a structure fire at a residence.
