A two-alarm fire devastated a Platte City apartment building early Saturday morning, leaving one dead and several others temporarily homeless. The fire occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday in Building E of the High Pointe Apartments, owned by Martin House Realty. Authorities are not yet releasing the name of the victim but said that he was a 54-year-old male who was in an apartment on the third floor. No foul play is suspected in the cause of the fire, authorities said. About 25 volunteer firefighters from the Weston, Camden Point and Central Platte fire stations, along with four pumper trucks and a ladder truck, worked for six hours to get the fire under control.

Bears of Pack 33 of Parkville Presbyterian visited The Landmark on Thursday to learn about the process of publishing a weekly newspaper. The boys will now earn a badge for their achievement. Those present included Bevin Powers, Kevin Pugsley, Lainey Powers (sister of Bevin), and Cassidy Young (daughter of Dorothy Young, leader).

Sly James will be the next mayor of Kansas City. In a campaign battle between two attorneys, James topped Mike Burke in Tuesday’s Kansas City general election. James carried 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Burke. James’ stronghold was south of the river. He carried Jackson County by almost a 2-1 margin. It was a different story in the Northland, where Burke, a development lawyer, had more supporters by a 2-1 margin.
