Pearl Brown wasted no time in putting her name on the ballot for the April election. Platte City’s incumbent mayor will be seeking her third term of office, having filed on Tuesday, the first day candidates for city and school board posts could do so. Four years ago, Brown won her first term by handily defeating Steve Wegner, the incumbent at the time. It was Brown’s first shot at political office. Two years ago she was reelected without opposition.
Congresswoman Pat Danner prepares to put in earrings she received as a thank you gift from area tobacco producers Thursday at the New Deal Tobacco Warehouse at Weston. Louis Smither, part-owner of the New Deal and president of the Missouri Burley Council, spoke on behalf of the tobacco producers. He thanked Danner for her efforts put forth over the past year. Following the presentation, Danner asked her constituents to voice concerns. Among the several issues discussed were the present budget dilemma, the possibility of making tobacco illegal, and Medicare concerns.
Gov. Mel Carnahan has announced eight members of the State Fair Commission. The State Fair Commission was established by Senate Bill 692, sponsored by Senate President Pro Tem Jim Mathewson, in the 1994 legislative session. Ida Cox, 47, of Platte City, was chosen as one of the board members of the State Fair.
