From the Between the Lines column by Ivan Foley: “Another year comes to a close at the end of this week and there’s no doubt 1993 was another eventful one, dominated at least in part by weather, with heavy snows in the winter and flooding in the summer. A lot of us will remember ‘93 for a long time. It certain was a memorable year at The Landmark, both in a positive and negative way. On the positive side, we took a step forward in early November with the installation of state of the art computer typesetting equipment, complete with a laser printer. On the negative side, in August of this year we lost our editor of 13 years, Clay McGinnis, who died following open heart surgery. Clay was a dedicated editor who took his work seriously. He has been missed. Still we’re excited about the staff we have now and will do our best to keep you informed on news of local interest in 1994.”
Platte County was declared a a disaster area, along with many other areas in the nation. The effects of the 1993 flood will continue well into 1994, as residents wait for government buyouts in Bean Lake and Tracy, for levees to be repaired and all the work that lies ahead in returning farmland, and towns like Parkville, back to their former glory. Although the flood overwhelmed us all for a large part of the year, life went on. Babies were born, loved ones died, awards were won and other obstacles were overcome.
