Riverside police opened a homicide investigation this week after entering an apartment to check the welfare of a man who had reportedly failed to appear at his place of employment for several days. The man was found dead in his apartment Monday evening, amid what police are calling ‘signs of violence.’

While the Platte County R-3 School Board last year volunteered to hold its tax levy steady at $4.19 rather than raising it by 22 cents to meet a maximum allowable level set by the state, Dr. Mike Reik, superintendent, told the school board last week that voluntary reduction won’t be a good option this year and may in fact result in core cutting. Instead, this year’s levy rate will most likely hit property owners with an additional 22 to 35 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, Reik said, indicating it was still too early to pin down an exact number.

While the state of the economy may be taking major tolls on other communities, it’s pretty much business as usual in Platte County and in fact, general sales tax revenues in the county are actually up a little, having increased by 3.6% compared with May of 2009. Platte County Auditor Siobhann Williams said that the increases in sales tax revenue have been driven by largely retail development in Platte County over the last decade.
