With the application deadline having passed on July 31, a final list of all businesses and groups filing for a Platte County grant program funded with federal CARES dollars is now available.
This listing includes all of the approximate 283 applicants and the amount each is requesting.
Ron Schieber, presiding commissioner, said last week the 283 applications requested a total of $17 million. “Small business” grants are being awarded by the county commissioners using up to $12.2 million of federal CARES Act money the county commission has in its control.
Schieber and the two associate commissioners, John Elliott and Dagmar Wood, have indicated an intention to use the vast majority of the $12.2 million in what they are calling a “small business grant program.”
Despite a request from the state treasurer that the commissioners pass $6 million of the $12 million on to the City of Kansas City based on the fact that 50 percent of the county population is comprised of residents within the city limits of Kansas City, the commissioners have declined to do so.
In addition, the Platte County Health Department has requested CARES money through the county commission but the commissioners have declined.
The health department has been able to provide free COVID-19 testing through the generosity of the University of Kansas Health System, but that free option is ending Aug. 15. With the CARES money being denied to them by the county commission, last week, the health department board of trustees voted to spend money from the health department reserve funds to continue a free COVID-19 testing program to county residents for 30 days (see related story here).
