Platte City Police Chief Ralph Landis was without a job this week following action of the mayor and aldermen last week. “My dismissal is nothing but a personal vendetta. It developed back when Pearl Brown and Mary Lou Highlander asked me to support their efforts to fight the past administration. I refused by not getting involved with politics,” Landis commented. Mayor Pearl Brown said the city received a letter of resignation from Landis on June 10. Landis told The Landmark he was forced to resign.

Platte City Mayor Pearl Brown had a couple special guests in City Hall one day last week when Leopold Gelaude, mayor of Pittem, Belgium, and Hubert Ameye, a Pittem city councilman, dropped by to visit. The Belgians were in the USA for the third time to visit families from Belgium that had emigrated here and Pittem’s sister city, Shawnee, Kan. Thomas Soetaert, mayor of Shawnee, is a descendant of a family that came here in 1892 from the Pittem-Egem area.

Pleasant Grove Confederate Cemetery, the most western from the Mississippi and one of only three in Missouri (joining with Springfield and Higginsville) was decorated with wreaths and flags by a contingent of faithful Civil War historians on Saturday, June 13. This is to stress the desperate need for volunteers to aid in restoring this historic two acre plot.
