Jails, recycling and lifespan

Greetings from the continued case of ponderisms. May your mind be free from such thoughts. I ponder these things, so you don’t have to.

The City of Kansas City did not get their temporary jail open in time for the World Cup, the event that they said they needed it for. The government quote is that it is not “fully operational.” A few things in life you probably want to be “fully operational,” and a jail might be one of them. Anyway, close counts in government work and horseshoes, carry on.

I’m staying out of the “reflection pond” debate. I thought we were draining the swamp years ago and it seems that both parties are only interested in restocking it every few years. Pond scum in a large body of stagnant water does not surprise one single soul that lives in the Midwest.

The average life span in the United States has rebounded back to 79 years old after taking a dip to 76.1 years in 2020-2021.That seems like reasonably good news if you’re not in a hurry to find an exit.

Many of these columns are not “fully operational,” so I can feel the City of Kansas City’s pain.

Why don’t people throw horseshoes anymore? Did cornhole push it out? Kinda sad, because I don’t think close counts in cornhole and horseshoes was one of the last games that close counted. That was important for those us that don’t excel at much. It was a game that gave hope to my average and “almost” cohorts in life’s journey.

66 days until college football starts. Don’t let it get in the way of your soccer fandom, but it is time for many of us to develop irrational exuberance over our respective teams. It is approximately 96 days until that exuberance is obliterated by reality. Carry on.

As reported in your Landmark, the City of Platte City is contracting out trash service to Redgate Disposal. I’ve been a Redgate customer for a few years and have found them to be very reliable and easy to work with, so most of you will probably be happy. Some of you won’t because you like to complain, we understand.

Anyway, of most interest to me was recycling. I have long had a rather obtuse trash opinion regarding local government and trash/recycling efforts. Recycling has been a hope and prayer for as long as I can remember. In reality it is more a “virtue signal” available to customers to pay for, rather than some cost or earth saving effort. It makes little to no economic or environmental impact and until it does, it will never work. I’ll likely die on this hill of opinion.

I refuse to recycle, because I am quite sure that any opinion of man that believes we have some control over the outcome of this place we call home is pure human hubris, kind of like thinking we can cure the climate.
