Platte City’s new trash ordinance was approved on Monday night with a vote of four aldermen in favor and two abstaining. The new ordinance outlines the guidelines for commercial trash haulers wanting to serve Platte City area commercial property owners who have dumpsters. New guidelines include the requirement that commercial businesses in the city limits provide proof they have a contract with a waste hauler. Haulers will have to pay a fee of $50 for the first truck used in the city limits and another $25 for each additional vehicle.
Construction of the new Pathfinder Elementary School near Barry School continues to be behind schedule and will not be ready for the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. “We’re making progress on the construction. But we don’t know yet, potentially we could open mid-year or we may wait until the following year,” said Dr. Mark Harpst, superintendent.
Another Democratic candidate has filed for first district commissioner in Platte County. Michelle Wilson of Kansas City has filed on the Democrat ticket against William “Bill” Quitmeier for the primary in August. On the Republican ticket, Kathy Dusenbery, current mayor of Parkville, has filed against incumbent first district commissioner Tom Pryor.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget that includes the largest tax increase in history and an $8.8 percent increase in non-emergency discretionary spending.
