A military man who spent some time living in Platte City while stationed at Fort Leavenworth has been killed in Iraq Army Maj. Michael R. Martinez, age 43, was one of 12 Americans killed in the crash of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter near a northern Iraq city near the border with Syria. The Army as of last week had not determined the cause of the crash. Martinez was a lawyer and a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He was a captain at the time of his death and was promoted to major posthumously.

A year-end report by Gale Cantu, codes coordinator for Platte County, shows that single family dwelling permits for the unincorporated portion of the county have been on a downward spiral since 2004. In 2005, residential permits for single family dwellings totaled 276. That number is down from 2004 year-end total of 296 permits. “Last year (2004) was a record for Platte County for single family permits,” Cantu said, and 2005 is the second highest year.
