Cpt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department said the female was walking on southbound I-29 “for unknown reasons” and was struck by a southbound SUV in the No. 2 lane of the interstate. The impact knocked the pedestrian into the No. 3 and No. 4 lanes, where she was run over by two other vehicles, Becchina said.

All involved vehicles stopped at the scene and no occupants of the vehicles were injured.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

“There were no signs of impairment on any of the drivers,” Becchina added.

It was the 28th Kansas City fatality of the year thus far, which is down considerably from last year’s total at this time. By this time last year there had been 46 traffic fatalities in Kansas City.
