Travelers spent $595.1 million in Platte County last year, according to the Missouri Division of Tourism. This spending generated roughly $8.7 million in state tax receipts and another $5.2 million in local tax receipts. Also, travel spending directly supported 9,143 jobs in the county, with an annual payroll of $139.4 million.

The third biennial Platte County Tobacco Festival is scheduled for Sept. 19 and 20. A one dollar gate fee will go to the restoration fund for the Ben Ferrel Platte County Museum in Platte City. The Platte County “Pride in Tobacco” festivals have previously been held in the tobacco barns in Weston, but this year will move to the Platte County Fairgrounds, where the buildings will be turned into simulated tobacco barns by the New Deal Tobacco Warehouse Company.
Platte County is going to have to convince the Missouri State Tax Commission that it did not have a $35.8 million decrease in assessed valuation on tangible personal property from the valuation reported in 1980. If it doesn’t, the county may face a tax levy hike to make up the difference, Lorraine Williams, county assessor, told the county administrative court.
