Kerry Durrill is this year’s winner of The Landmark Award for English, given each year to a student at Platte County R-3 High School. The Landmark created the award in 1982 to foster an interest in the English language. The winner is selected by a faculty panel and receives a certificate and $250. Durrill served as feature editor of the Pirate Clipper for two years and received two first place journalism awards from MISPA for a regular column and center page spread.

Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Todd Graves is asking the public for assistance in apprehending a fugitive who failed to appear for his trial last week on a felony burglary charge. Joseph W. Barko, 34, was scheduled to go on trial last week for Platte County Circuit Court Judge Owens Lee Hull, Jr. Although Barko’s attorney arrived for court, Barko never showed. Judge Hull ordered Barko’s $4,000 bond forfeited, issued a fugitive warrant for his arrest and set a new $30,000 cash only bond.
