Platte City firefighters were kept busy Thursday, Jan. 10, responding to calls. The first occurred at 2:30 p.m. at the Platte City residence of James F. Brown. A faulty fireplace was blamed for the blaze, which was confined to the interior of the house. According to fire chief Steve Hardesty, the fire was ignited when coals fell through a crack in the base of the fireplace. The second call was a brush fire behind Bello Mondo, Building 1, at about 7:30 p.m. Children playing unsupervised with a charcoal grill in a tree house were believed to be responsible for the blaze. For a short time the fire presented a hazard to Buildings 1 and 2 of the complex, but the firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 10 minutes. The fire was extinguished approximately 45 minutes later. According to Hardesty, no dollar value has been set on the damage in either fire.
