The four-vehicle crash occurred at 3 p.m. on Wednesday on southbound I-29 about a mile south of Camden Point. That area of the interstate has been the location of miles-long traffic backups in recent days, with the backup beginning at a bridge repair location near Tracy and extending as far as five miles north to near the Camden Point exit.

According to a report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash began when a southbound 2019 Peterbilt tractor-trailer being driven by Samani B. Mahjouri, 57, of Lincoln, Neb. began to skid and struck the rear of a 2002 Toyota Corolla being driven by Patsy A. Withrow, age 78, of Savannah, Mo. The Toyota then struck the rear of a 2022 Freightliner before traveling off the right side of the roadway into a tree line. The tractor-trailer then struck the rear of the Freightliner, forcing the Freightliner into the rear of a 2022 Ford F350. The Freightliner was being driven by Sultan Singh, 31, of Manitoba, Canada.

The infant, less than a year old of Sedalia, Mo., was pronounced dead at Children’s Mercy Hospital at 10:21 p.m. Wednesday.

In addition to the infant, four others are listed as suffering injuries in the crash. Of those four, the most seriously hurt was Withrow, the driver of the Corolla. She was transported to North Kansas City Hospital with serious injuries.

Others listed with injuries include:

Mahjouri, the driver of the tractor-trailer, with minor injuries, indicated he will seek his own treatment.

Terri L. Swartz, 44, St. Joseph, a passenger in the Corolla, minor injuries, taken to North Kansas City Hospital.

Joseph D. Waxmonksi, 47, of Linwood, Kan., driver of the Ford F350, minor injuries, indicated he will seek his own treatment.
