The atmosphere was smokin’ when Platte County officials grilled burgers as a show of appreciation for employees Friday. Shown working the grills were Sandy Krohne, county clerk; Betty Knight, presiding commissioner; and Bonnie Brown, treasurer. The special picnic was funded with reimbursement from a workplace insurance program in which the county participates. The grilling was done on the balcony outside the commission meeting room.
The winner of an annual award given to a Platte County R-3 High School student by The Landmark has been chosen. Hannah Rickman has received a $250 scholarship (cash prize) from the newspaper, thanks to being selected by a faculty panel as the winner of The Landmark English Award. Rickman was chosen by the English teachers at the school to receive the award for being the best senior English student.
Missouri’s first case of H1N1 influenza (swine flu) was confirmed in Platte County last week. However, the Platte County Health Department wants citizens not to panic. Mary Jo Everhart, health department director, said the H1N1 strain is basically a variant of the annual influenza strain. Everhart said only one person has died in the United States from H1N1 but last year 86 people died from the seasonal flu.
