A pilot was killed and his passenger injured when a small plane crashed on the edge of KCI Airport on Monday. John C. Dart, 73, was killed while trying to make an instrument landing, said officials. He had radioed KCI before the crash that his plane’s gyroscope had failed. The passenger was Dart’s son-in-law, Wilber Lala of Belize in Central America. Lala was taken to Liberty Hospital.

Police Chief Alan Lowry displayed a plaque that was awarded to Platte City for having more than 70 percent of motorists wearing a seat belt. A survey was taken this summer by the police to check on seat belt usage. Lowry said Platte City did better than the national average, which is about 63 percent. He reminded that the laws of the state now require a person driving a car to wear a seat belt and those not doing so can be fined.
