New changes to security measures at KCI will take effect on Saturday, Aug. 4. The new measures include the lifting of a ban on disposable lighters and an easement on breast milk restrictions. The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has announced the ban on common lighters will no longer be enforced for carry-on luggage. According to the TSA, every day nationwide more than 22,000 lighters are confiscated at airport security checkpoints. Torch lighters will still be banned from carry-on luggage.

KCI held an open house to display the future options for possible development of airport property as well as Kansas City, North on Thursday. There was also information about whether a third runway might be needed at the airport. Several concepts to replace or redesign the layout of terminals at KCI to better suit growth and update the facility were presented. Currently the airport only uses 43 of its 62 available gates. By 2025 the number is expected to increase to 59 gates being used by airlines.
