The Platte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash at 3:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 3 on Hwy. 45 just north of Kisker Road.

The preliminary investigation of the crash indicates that a 2018 Kia Rio was traveling north on Hwy. 45 when it collided nearly head-on with a 2024 BMW 230i that was traveling southbound on Hwy. 45.

The driver of the Kia Rio, an 18-year-old female from Kansas City, Kan. identified as Emmelie Rodriguez, died at the scene.

The driver of the BMW 230i, a 79-year-old male resident of Topeka, Kan., and his passenger, a 69-year of female, both had serious but not life-threatening injuries and were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The cause and circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team.

Hwy. 45 remained closed for approximately four hours during the on-scene investigation.
