A Platte City teen was found dead Saturday in a vehicle at his friend’s house in Weston. Authorities identified the teen as Platte County R-3 senior Devin James Leeper, age 18.

According to Terry Blanton, Weston police chief, Leeper had gone with a friend to Weston to spend the night on Friday. The friend parked the vehicle in the garage of the home along Mandi Lane, and let Leeper sleep in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

The next morning the friend’s father found Leeper in the vehicle and could not wake him. The West Platte Fire Department was called around 11:20 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Blanton said the police department is waiting for the results from an autopsy and toxicology report. The reports may take a couple of weeks to be returned to the department.

“An autopsy was performed,” said Blanton. “We are just waiting on the results of the autopsy and toxicology report. We don’t believe it was foul play and are looking at this as an accidental death, a possible drug overdose.”

Leeper was a senior at Platte County High School in Platte City and was enrolled at the Johnson County Community College, School of Culinary Arts for next fall.

As of 2 p.m. on Tuesday a group on Facebook called “Rest in Peace, Devin” had 130 members. Leeper’s obituary can be found on page B-3 of The Landmark.
