County’s roads plan to be reviewed at public meetingPlatte County officials will host a public review of the Roads Master Plan at 7 p.m., Aug. 20 in Platte County Commission meeting room.

Merging citizen input with extensive planning, the comprehensive Roads Master Plan for unincorporated Platte County is being developed by the county with assistance from planning consultants HNTB. During this public meeting, citizens will be asked to review road improvements and funding options identified in the Roads Master Plan. Citizen input will be reflected in the final plan.

This is the second in a series of public meeting focusing on the Roads Master Plan. When complete, the document will be the first ever Roads Master Plan for unincorporated areas of Platte County.

“Roads that support the rural areas of the county must be as reliable as the infrastructure that services municipalities within the county,” 2nd District Commissioner Steve Wegner said. “Without that balance, the county is not preparing as best as it can to support future growth.”

In effect, the Roads Master Plan involves every road and bridge in unincorporated Platte County. Its primary goal is to enhance general usage and safety of roads in the county’s road districts. Among the many possible solutions that the plan offers are suggestions about which collector roads, arterial roads and bridges should receive improvements.

The initial draft was presented to a 25-member citizen task force in July. The task force is considering several funding options for the Roads Master Plan. The consensus is to find several funding sources and not to draw the entire road improvement funding from one source.

Once funding options are identified and approved by the citizen task force, the county will begin finalizing the Roads Master Plan. The final draft of the plan will be complete in late August.
