Winter officially arrived at 10:56 am. on Dec. 21 and the Platte County Red Cross chapter is offering to the public a free brochure called “Winter Survival Tips,” Karen Shanks, volunteer chairman for Red Cross Safety Services, announced. The brochure includes basic first aid tips for the most common emergencies; how to survive in the wilderness while hiking or skiing; survival in your home during a heat loss emergency; energy saving tips; how to survive in your car if you are caught in a snowstorm; how to make a survival kit for your home and car; and what to put in the kit to help you in an emergency.
Latest revision of the 1980 census shows that Platte County’s population is 46,207, an increase over the 45,118 in the first preliminary report, and a 44 percent increase over the 32,081 in 1970, the largest percentage increase of any area county.
The ceremonies were brief but appropriate as seven county officials elected Nov. 4 were given the oath of office on Wednesday, Dec. 31. In an 11 a.m. swearing in ceremony held in the lobby of the Platte County Courthouse in Platte City, Joan Cox, county clerk, administered the oath of office to Sue Dance, Ralph Wittmeyer, Tom Thomas, Lorraine Williams, Fran Durham, John L. Bless, and Robert L. Buford.
