In case you missed it

In case you missed it, Platte County’s university is on target for another national title. The Park University women’s volleyball team – the reigning national champions – just blew through the American Midwest Conference with a perfect 12-0 record and a perfect 3-0 record in the conference tournament.

Head coach Mike Talamantes, and volleyball stars Celina Monteiro and sisters Nada and Noura Meawad return to the NAIA national tournament as a dynasty in the making. I’ve had a pretty good view the past couple of years as these women have absolutely destroyed teams left and right. I’m certain it’s because of their PA announcer, right?

To the class of 2025

Please and thank you

The Pirates head to Des Moines Dec. 3 to defend their national championship. It’s the greatest sports story in maybe the history of Northland sports. Good luck!

  • In case you missed it, it’s suddenly become okay to put your Christmas tree up the day after Halloween. I’m not sure how or when this became acceptable, but nobody checked with me. My sister sent me a picture on November 1 of her stockings hung and her tinsel tossed. Why not just cancel the Fourth of July and start putting the lights and trees up then? This is not okay.
  • In case you missed it, a Northland tradition is under new, new ownership. Chappel’s restaurant, one of the greatest sports museums in the country that also happens to sell food and drinks, changed owners a year ago to some high-falootin’ owners from California. Jim Chappel cashed out and sold the business and the new owners revamped the traditional bar food menu of chicken fingers and nachos to include kale and “lighter” street tacos. Customers drove away in swarms – like the Chiefs defense when asked to tackle someone across the middle. The business, which has a Super Bowl trophy and a Babe Ruth baseball, couldn’t bring people in if they paid them.

Back comes Jim Chappel and some other investors to the rescue. The chicken fingers and cheap domestic beers are back, and… guess what? So are the customers.

  • In case you missed it, the North Kansas City Hornets football team have had two of their best seasons in literally decades. And in both 2018 and 2019, they couldn’t get past the Staley Falcons. There’s going to be a year that Northtown beats Staley, but they just can’t seem to find their number. At least don’t put your Christmas tree up until Staley beats Northtown, okay?
  • This has been a pretty phenomenal year for Northland high school football. Platte County has played well and will take on Grain Valley Friday to head to state. Platte County has been incredibly consistent in the post-season the past several years and stands a great chance against Grain Valley.
  • In case you missed it, high school basketball is just around the corner, too. This means Park Hill and Park Hill South have their time to shine.
