Calming traffic, screwworm flies and such

I don’t want you to panic, but we have a new health threat running through the country. Apparently, some cows in Texas have been infiltrated by “screwworm flies.” Cattle farmers know all this. If you are a cattle farmer, go back about your business, but for the rest of you take notice. A screwworm fly is a flesh-eating parasite that feeds off warm blooded animals. In case you missed high school health class, most humans are warm blooded.

Anyway, they mostly prefer large-butted cattle over our species, so that is good. They have not been prevalent in this country for about a decade but crept back across Trump’s border within the last month or so and are making a home within the hides of some Texas cattle.
If, by chance, you feel a fly digging a hole in your skin, seek medical attention. I am not a doctor.

Pretty disappointed that Republicans have let these things get across the border. This is not what I voted for. Build the dang wall.

The City of Kansas City has completed a large area of their “traffic calming infrastructure” and have promoted the completion. I have no idea who came up with this stuff, but I’d like to experience their altered state at some point. Officially it can be described as “utilizing physical and psychological design interventions to reduce vehicle speed, deter cut-through traffic and increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists.”

That’s kinda complex for my simple mind. That also sounds like government gobbly goop to me. When you get a chance, drive down Broadway in downtown and tell me if the new setup “calms” you.

With all due respect to Kansas City, I don’t think there is a road in the entire metro that handles more bicyclists than Interurban between Camden Point and Highway 92 in Platte County. Do you think we need “calming infrastructure” out there, or just maybe everyone pay attention and skip the cost? I’m sure smarter government people will answer that question for us.

I quit bicycling around 12 years old. Couldn’t get those shorts on since then.

I’ve never knowingly had a screwworm dig into my skin, but it seems painful. I wonder if they drill those symmetrically perfect holes like carpenter bees do? That would be interesting and concerning.

Wait. Don’t look that up. I did it for you. They don’t make perfect holes. It’s more a maggot-like type wound look, based on my internet search. You’re welcome.

I have given up primary politics for the summer. The “Me” party of which I am the founding and currently only member does not like watching these family fights and “we” will decide if we care when the general election rolls around. Nobody likes watching a family fight and then “fake” make up after one of them gets trounced in public.
