Remember when you had a 401(k)? Like…three months ago? Wasn’t that fun? Back then, you could daydream about retiring on a beach sipping piña coladas, not worrying about tomorrow, and enjoying golden sunsets. Now, the golden sunsets are accompanied by a sinking feeling in your stomach as you check your retirement account balance. A poetic kind of irony, isn’t it?

Here’s the thing: I know as much about the stock market as I do about astrophysics—and that is to say, next to nothing. But one universal truth seems to prevail: everyone tells us to invest in it and, once we’re in, to “ride it out.” It’s a strategy built on blind faith and an iron stomach, but what about moments like the last couple of weeks? I’m pretty sure the phrase “no matter what” was meant for cold coffee and bad hair days, not stock plunges that make the Zambezi Zinger look tame.

If you’ve been living under a rock, let me congratulate you—you’ve avoided the carnage altogether! For the rest of us, the ongoing tariff-induced chaos has turned investment portfolios into ghost towns. Companies are freaking out, prices are set to rise across the board, and stockholders are bailing faster than rats off a sinking ship—or perhaps flies into a bug zapper, if that imagery hits closer to home.

Let’s sprinkle in a few nauseating facts to add insult to injury. The Dow Jones fell by a whopping 2,200 points in one day—a nosedive so dramatic you’d think it auditioned for a soap opera. This turmoil hasn’t stayed local; it’s spread globally. Hong Kong’s market, for instance, took a 13% hit in just one trading day. Tech stocks have been pummeled, as the components used to build smartphones and computers—largely sourced abroad—are on the tariff chopping block. And oh, the human drama this economic mess creates!

So, what now? Where do we go from here? Do we cry into our spreadsheets or learn to embrace the chaos? Maybe it’s time to rethink our approach to retirement, perhaps by investing in something a little less volatile—like lottery tickets or backyard chickens. And for those brave souls sticking it out in the stock market, let’s remember one important thing: this isn’t the first time markets have tanked spectacularly. And, with enough resilience (and maybe an extra bottle of Tums/Jack Daniels), it might not be the last.

Besides, there’s a silver lining in all this mess. At least checking your account balance has become an excellent form of cardio—watching those losses adds just enough adrenaline to get your heart pumping. Who needs gym memberships anymore when you can sweat over Wall Street instead?

Hang in there, folks. Your retirement dreams might need a slight adjustment—from beachfront bliss to a cozy backyard hammock—but we’ll get through this. Probably. Until then, keep your sense of humor intact—because if the stock market doesn’t recover soon, laughter might be the only free thing we have left.
