Gregory W. Breeden will be arraigned on one count of passing bad checks in Division I Circuit Court Thursday in Platte County. Breeden’s bond was reduced Monday from $100,000 to $25,000 with mandatory electronic shackling. Breeden has applied for a speedy trial, which means that he is guaranteed that his trial on the charge will occur within 180 days, according to Greg Crader, chief deputy in the Platte County Sheriff’s Department. Breeden also faces bad check charges in Clay and Jackson Counties.

Barry Middle School eighth grader Sara Swenson received second place in the Dickens Holiday Fair essay contest for middle schoolers in the Kansas City metro area. Students wrote on the topic “How would you teach Scrooge the meaning of Christmas?” A copy of her story on “The Wooden Star” was presented to Platte County R-3 School Board members at the Dec. 15 meeting. Swenson received a $75 gift certificate from Rainy Day Books, among other prizes.
