The color guard of VFW Post 4055 played a highly visible role in the cannon dedication ceremony held on the Platte County Courthouse lawn Friday morning. Members presenting the colors included Mike Cox, Jack Coffey, Norman Buckler, Roy Hornbuckle, Dean Winter and Ralph Kindred. Community members enjoyed a half hour program which included patriotic music performed by the Platte County R-3 High School band and the dedication of a 155 mm towed howitzer presented by VFW Post 4055 to Platte County to commemorate veterans of America’s wars. Andrew Higgins, former chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court, was the featured speaker at the ceremony.

The parks and recreation board of the City of Platte City recently heard a report on the results of the survey concerning possible uses and sources of funding for the newly-acquired park for Platte City. The survey had been conducted by the marketing class at Platte County R-3 High School. Approximately 1,050 survey forms were mailed to residents of Platte City, with 379 forms returned. The survey asked residents to prioritize equipment or services they would like to see installed in the new park; whether they would support a levy of no more than 20 cents per $100 assessed valuation for operation, maintenance and development of the park system; additional ideas for funding; and possible names for the new area.
