Carl Layman, Jr. of Easley, South Carolina and Deborah Craven of Platte City have announced their upcoming marriage on July 30 at First Baptist Church of Platte City. Debby is a 1990 graduate of Platte County R-3 and is the daughter of Ted and Joyce Craven of Platte City. Carl graduated from Easley and is the son of Carl, Sr. and Ginny Layman of Easley, South Carolina. Both graduated from Bob Jones University with B.S. degrees in teaching.


Platte County commissioners learned Monday that the county will receive $75,000 up front from Boomtown, if the gaming issue passes at the Aug. 2 election. The Nevada-based gaming and entertainment company proposed to build a $38 million riverboat gaming and family entertainment complex at I-435 and Hwy. FF if gaming is approved.

At the Tuesday night meeting, the Platte City Board of Aldermen authorized the purchase of 72 acres of land from Don Soper contingent upon the city receiving a Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) grant for a park. The value of the property was assessed at $285,000. The city will deed over a piece of riverfront property valued at $21,000 to Soper and pay $132,000. Soper will donate the remaining portion of the cost to the city.
