Fifty years ago on Aug. 5, Helen Kisker and William Poss slipped away and were married by the Rev. Henry Blanke at the Lutheran parsonage in Leavenworth, Kan. On Aug. 6, they will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at their home near East Leavenworth with an open house from 2-5 p.m. The occasion is being sponsored by their children and grandchildren. All friends and relatives are invited to attend.
Of what possible historical significance is a mice-infested garage? Not much, unless it happens to be the garage where Walt Disney observed mice scampering and, perhaps, named one Mickey. Some biographers of Walt Disney credit the garage behind Disney’s boyhood home in Kansas City as the spot where the idea of the world’s most famous animated character, Mickey Mouse, originated. As debatable as that may be, Disney’s home and garage recently received the historic seal of approval when they became Missouri’s 300th entry on the National Register of Historic Places. The Walt Disney residence, 3028 Bellefontain Avenue, Kansas City, is a one and a half story rectangular wood frame cottage built in 1905. The garage, located to the west of the house, was built in 1916-17. Before his death in 1966, Disney pioneered full-length color cartoons, popularized nature films, expanded into comedy, adventure and musical films, created a legendary amusement park, and had entertained three generations of Americans.
