David Wallingford of Platte City shows a big morel mushroom that he and his daughter, Tamara Workman, found underneath a dead elm. Wallingford, who has a heart condition, can’t walk too far from the road but he didn’t have far to go to find this morel. It was found at King City, 30 miles east of St. Joseph. The mushroom measures 9.5 inches and weighs 10 ounces.
The West Platte R-3 School Board met Thursday night and the board voted in executive session to hire Steve Boeh (pronounced Bay) as the Blue Jay head basketball coach for next school year, starting this fall. Boeh has been the head coach at Highland, Kan. High School for the past 10 years. Dr. Mark Harpst, superintendent, said Boeh has had good success over the years.
Julie Ann Bengfort and Erin Sean McGaw have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage. The future bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bengfort of Shawnee, Kan. and a 1988 graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Julie has a bachelor of science degree in medical records administration from the University of Kansas and is employed at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. The future groom is the son of Theresa Raney of Platte City and Sean McGaw of Shawnee, Kan. and is a 1987 graduate of Platte County R-3 High School. He has a bachelor of science degree in business marketing and logistics from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
