Jim Dunn, faculty sponsor and coach, presented a medal to Anne Swaney, daughter of Georgianne and Jack Swaney, Platte City. Anne earned the medal last week, with a dramatic interpretation, “Clear Glass Marbles.”

A broken pole in a 161 kilovolt transmission line left about 3,000 Missouri Public Service customers in northern Platte County without electricity for three hours this past Thursday morning. The outage occurred at 1:53 a.m., power was restored to MPS customers at 4:51 a.m. The customers affected live in Platte City, Farley, Weston, Tracy and other surrounding areas. The top 15 feet of an 85-foot pole broke off after a down guy strain-insulator failed. The cause of the failure is unknown, according to MPS Liberty District manager Tom Klamm. MPS crews responded immediately to restore service and to repair the broken pole.

Cross country will be on the Platte County R-3 sports menu beginning next school year. Approval was given to adding it when the school board met Thursday night. Cross country will be open to both boys and girls and will add to the current fall selection of volleyball and football. The school board unanimously approved cross country, with the thought of adding another choice for those students who may not be interested in football or volleyball. It’s a low-cost sport and it’s not expected to deplete numbers from the other two sports already operating in the fall.
