Disa Rice, third grade teacher at Siegrist Elementary in the Platte County R-3 School District, received the Fox 4 News Crystal Apple Award on Wednesday. Rice was surprised by the presentation, as Siegrist staff and Platte County R-3 administration kept the purpose of the assembly secret until Wednesday morning. Fox 4 news personalities Mark Alford and Loren Halifax were on hand.

About 30 students and staff at Siegrist Elementary School were evacuated from the building at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in response to a small fire in the north hallway of the building. The fire was caused by a short in the wiring of an emergency hallway lamp. Five Central Platte firefighters removed the lamp and the “all clear” signal was given about 30 minutes after the alarm was pulled. There were no injuries.

Bill Knighton has resigned his position as alderman for ward one in Platte City. Mayor Dave Brooks attempted to move quickly to fill the seat at a special meeting held Tuesday night. Brooks nominated Marsha Clark for the position, bur aldermen voted to table the matter, with some expressing a desire to meet Clark before voting to approve or disapprove the nomination. In his resignation letter, Knighton said: “As of May 9, 2007 at 8 a.m. this is notice of my resignation as alderman of ward one. Due to Jody (his wife) and I wanting to sell our house and relocate outside the city limits of Platte City.”
