The City of Parkville has completed intersection improvements on Hwy. 9 at 6th Street.
The improvements were recommended in the Route 9 Corridor Study adopted in 2015 and in a traffic study completed for the Six at Park development.
In 2018, the Parkville Board of Aldermen approved Six at Park, a $9.8 million project located at the intersection of Hwy. 9 and 6th Street consisting of a four story, 56,840 square foot class-A office building for commercial office/service uses, a 175-stall parking lot and multi-modal transportation improvements.
The City of Parkville and the Parkville Old Towne Market Community Improvement District provided funding for the parking lot that is available to Six at Park during business hours and the public after hours on weekdays and all day on weekends.
A traffic impact analysis was completed for the project and determined that the intersection needed both a southbound left-turn lane and a northbound right-turn lane on Hwy. 9, regardless of whether or not the development was built.
The study also concluded that a westbound right-turn lane on 6th Street would be needed in the future. Although the westbound right-turn lane was not required, the city’s on-call engineer, George Butler Associates (GBA), recommended that it be included in the project.
City staff worked with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and GBA to develop a conceptual plan that incorporated all the turn lanes included in the traffic study.
To assist with construction of the project, the city applied for and received the Governor’s Transportation Cost Share Program grant and a cost share agreement with the Missouri Highways and Transportation Committee. The grant covered 50 percent of the cost and the city’s local match was 50 percent.
The city was awarded the Governor’s Transportation Cost Share Program grant because Six at Park project demonstrated economic development through the creation of new jobs.
Construction of the improvements by MegaKC began in May and were substantially completed in September. They include northbound and southbound left turn lanes, a northbound right turn lane, an eastbound right turn lane on 6th Street, a 10-foot trail on the east side, a five foot sidewalk on the west side, curbs and gutters, asphalt roadways and street lights.
Mayor Nan Johnston said, “The city is excited that the intersection improvements have been completed. This section will match the city’s plans for the Route 9 Corridor from Hwy. 45 to Mattox Drive.”
