There was a short fireworks display inside of an area city hall early Sunday morning.

Authorities are saying it appears a large firework was deposited into the drop box attached to Dearborn City Hall, causing damage to the interior of the building.

Captain Erik Holland of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department said neighbors in the area reported the suspicious sound around 3:30 Sunday morning.

Anything placed into the bill pay drop box slides inside the city hall building, Holland explained.

“There’s some damage to the box itself and some damage to the inside of the building from the different pieces of the box that flew apart,” Holland said.

He explained that the drop slot is not in the front door, but is attached to the building in an area separate from the door.

“Someone dropped a large firework of some sort into the slot of the box and it detonated,” Holland explained.

Holland said no dollar amount on the estimated damage to the building was available. He declined to say whether the department has any suspects in the incident.
