A North Kansas City man has been charged with two counts of felony assault after a stabbing incident at a home in the Walnut Creek neighborhood near Parkville.
Caleb D. Hayes, 28, of North Kansas City, allegedly stabbed two people at a party in the 11000 block of Walnut Creek Drive early Sunday morning.
According to Capt. Frank Hunter, sheriff’s department public information officer, Hayes arrived at the party around 9 p.m. Saturday, July 4 and left around midnight.
According to the probable cause statement, Hayes arrived at the party with two 34-year-old females. Hayes was later confronted by the homeowner and accused of attempting to sell OxyContin and was asked to leave.
The three left around midnight, but returned several hours later after not finding anymore fireworks displays to attend.
When Hayes returned, the homeowner demanded he leave the residence, but Hayes allegedly refused. The homeowner went to call police and then heard people screaming and fighting across the street.
A 25-year-old man sustained an eight to nine inch cut across his chest. A 35-year-old man sustained a cut across his forehead and stab wounds to his back and ribs. Both victims were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Platte County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call concerning the stabbing at 2:55 a.m. Hayes left with the two females in the vehicle. Initial reports said at some point Hayes allegedly threatened the owner/driver of the vehicle with the knife and took control of the vehicle. But Hunter said it now appears Hayes did not threaten the driver of the vehicle, but at some point did gain control of the vehicle.
Hayes was arrested on Monday after police received a tip that he may be staying in the area near 169 Highway and Barry Road. Hunter said Hayes was residing in the area at the time since being paroled.
Hunter said Hayes was on probation when the stabbing occurred.
According to the sheriff’s department website, Hayes was still in the Platte County Detention Center on Tuesday. Bond was set at $100,000 for Hayes.
A court records search of Hayes shows he pled guilty in June 2008 in Clay County to a felony charge of knowingly burning or exploding. Hayes was sentenced to two years of incarceration beginning June 26, 2008.
According to media reports the fire occurred on Feb. 25, 2008. Hayes was allegedly hired by former Claycomo Alderman Marty Lambertson for $500 to burn down a home in the 400 block of Eugene Field Road.
Lambertson allegedly paid Hayes to burn the home of his neighbor so he would have a place to store his boat.
According to court records, Lambertson was charged with attempted second degree arson and pled guilty in February 2009. He was given a suspended imposition of sentence with three years of supervised probation.
Hayes also pled guilty in August 2008 in Platte County to a first degree felony charge of tampering with a motor vehicle from an incident in August 2007. Hayes was sentenced to three years of incarceration beginning Aug. 14, 2008.
The probable cause statement shows Hayes was also convicted of second degree tampering in Shannon County, Mo from 1998; a conviction for aggravated assault in Johnson County, Kan. from 2004; and a conviction for misdemeanor possession in Clay County, Mo. from 2007.
