Effective immediately, the City of Parkville is suspending its Flock camera program and turning off all cameras while it reviews concerns involving privacy, data access, data sharing and system controls.
This comes after the Parkville Police Department held two informational sessions on the topic Sept. 10.
The city understands that this technology has been a concern for many members of the community. While the city has not determined that Parkville’s system was misused, the concerns raised about who may access information, how that information may be shared and what controls are available are legitimate and deserve careful review.
The city has confidence in the Parkville Police Department and its use of technology in support of public safety. At the same time, the city must be confident that any system it uses provides appropriate transparency, accountability and safeguards for data generated by Parkville’s cameras.
During the suspension, the cameras will not collect new images or license plate data. The city will use this review period to gather additional information and determine the appropriate path forward for Parkville.
