Details of the curriculum expansion approved by the West Platte R-2 School Board were explained this week by Dr. Terry Stewart, superintendent. Goal of the expansion, Stewart said, is to add classes and enrich the curriculum without requiring more classroom space. The junior-senior high school has been operating a six-period day with each period meeting for 55 minutes. The district can now shift to a seven-class period day with each class meeting for 50 minutes. This he explained will meet AAA classification requirements and the starting and ending time of the school day and the lunch hour will not change. By this method, the district can then add 20 to 25 new classes to the curriculum because each teacher would teach another class. The district will determine what classes need to be added to the curriculum.
