Geoff Torres of West Platte R-2 School District was the first place winner in the Platte County Spelling Bee held Monday at Park Hill R-3. Michael Dragon of Lakeview placed third. Top spellers from various schools in the county competed.


The Park Hill R-5 School District has announced the addition of Shelia Ann Cone, Ph.D. as director of middle school and secondary education. In the position, Dr. Cone will be responsible for the coordination of the scope and sequence of the 6-12 curriculum.

John and Deneta Stielow of Gladstone are parents of a seven pound, nine ounce daughter, Brooke Taylor, born March 6, 1991 at St. Luke’s. Maternal grandparents are Roy J. and Wanda Holt, Jr. of Lathrop. Paternal grandparents are Keith and Mary Stielow of Platte City.


A cutting torch was used last week to slice up the metal roof of a building which formerly housed the KC Barbecue and Kossen Auto Body Shop. The building was gutted by fire in 1988 and declared to fall under Platte City’s dangerous building ordinance which requires it to be torn down.


The Park Hill Jazz Band placed first in the seventh annual UMKC Jazz Festival, March 9, in Kansas City. Park Hill beat out 20 other schools from a three state area to win the trophy.
