An audience participant who volunteered to be apprehended by a military dog as part of a police dog demonstration was taken away by ambulance during the Platte City Police Department’s National Night Out event Tuesday evening. Det. Al Devalkenaere of the Platte City Police Department said shortly after the ambulance left that he had not yet received an update and so was not sure exactly what injuries the volunteer had suffered.
Can a county elected official pay bonuses to county employees? “The short answer is no,” was the response from Bob Shaw, county counselor, responding to a request for a legal opinion on the matter from Jason Brown, presiding commissioner. But that’s exactly what David Christian, Platte County assessor, did in July. Christian paid out about $11,000 in what he termed “one time bonuses” to employees. Christian later paid back the money using his personal funds.
A veteran captain in the Platte County Sheriff’s Department announced his retirement after being suspended from duty. As exclusively reported in last weeks Landmark, Cpt. Steve Johnson was suspended with pay. The department later last week officially confirmed that Johnson was suspended for a “violation of policy.” After The Landmark’s report in last week’s issue, the sheriff’s department on Thursday said Johnson had decided to retire.
