HAD A PREVIOUS DWI ARREST IN 2020
A Platte City attorney was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated on Sunday night.
Scott L. Campbell, 61, a longtime defense attorney with an office directly across from the Platte County Courthouse, was taken into custody after being stopped by Platte City police Sunday about 9:15 p.m.
Campbell was booked into the Platte County Jail a short time later, with the booking information listing investigative charges as “DWI-Prior.”
Campbell had a previous DWI arrest in 2020.
No charges associated with Sunday night’s arrest are listed on Case.net, Missouri’s official online portal for accessing public circuit and appellate court records, as of Landmark deadline.
An incident report obtained from the Platte City Police Department indicates an officer observed a gray Ford F-150 traveling south on Running Horse Road in the area of the Platte County Community Center. The officer noted the vehicle was traveling at a slow rate of speed. The officer, who had been northbound on Running Horse, turned around and approached the vehicle, which he noted was traveling at 25 mph in a 35 mph zone. Campbell’s vehicle continued south at 25 mph, now in a 45 mph zone.
The officer says in his report Campbell’s vehicle crossed the solid white fog line (the solid white line on the right side of roadway) with both passenger side tires. While continuing south, the vehicle went back to the travel lane and then touched the solid white fog line two more times.
The officer says he activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. Campbell’s vehicle “continued south, touching the solid white fog line with the passenger side tires and finally stopped approximately 10 feet south of Devonshire Drive on Running Horse Road,” according to the incident report.
According to the report, Campbell was the driver and sole occupant of the pickup. The officer says he smelled an odor of alcohol emitting from the driver’s breath and noted Campbell had bloodshot and watery eyes and his face was flushed, he was slurring his words and talking very low. According to the report, Campbell told the officer he was coming from his law office. The officer noted that Campbell had trouble retrieving his license from his wallet.
The officer requested Platte County Sheriff’s Department to assist with a possible driving while intoxicated investigation, according to the report. Two sheriff’s deputies arrived. A deputy asked Campbell to exit the vehicle. “I observed Scott exit and he appeared to be unsteady on his feet and staggering while walking,” the Platte City officer wrote in his report.
The report notes that Campbell refused to submit to the standardized field sobriety test and refused a preliminary breath test. Campbell was then placed under arrest and transported to the Platte County Detention Center.
The Landmark has requested a copy of the sheriff’s department incident report on the DWI arrest, but that report was not yet available from the sheriff’s office at deadline.
