Authorities have nailed down the cause of the horrific fire in a Platte City apartment complex that killed a man the morning of Saturday, March 19. Authorities announced they have determined the cause to be “the improper disposal of smoking material, such as cigarettes.” It was learned that soil/fertilizer mixture inside a planter played a role in starting the blaze at the High Pointe Apartment Complex.

Between the Lines by Ivan Foley: Differences over a new labor deal between the unionized employees of the Northland Regional Ambulance District and the district’s board of directors have apparently been solved after some mediation. It was mentioned at last week’s NRAD board of directors meeting that a new pact calls for a 45-cent per hour raise for most employees. Somehow this bit of news has been overshadowed by a recent land acquisition made by the NRAD board. Perhaps you’ve heard about that.

A former Platte County R-3 student has been charged with unlawfully entering the high school, where authorities allege he masturbated on underwear taken from boys’ lockers. The young man, of Smithville, has been charged with second degree burglary charges that were filed after high school employees reported a suspicious person had been seen by students in the school prior to school hours. Two students reported chasing an individual out of the boys locker room about 6:30 a.m. on March 23. The person was wearing FedEx clothing.
