EDITOR:
It is deeply concerning that Platte County State Representatives Mike Jones and Sean Pouche voted to, yet again, deny the citizens of Platte County and of the state of Missouri their democratic rights guaranteed to them in the Missouri Constitution by giving initial approval to HJR 3 and HB 1.
HJR 3 completely wipes out every day Missourians’ abilities to pass laws that they believe in. It gives smaller counties excess power and would even allow as little as 5% of voters to enact new laws. This comes after Representatives Jones and Pouche voted to overturn the votes of Platte Countians and Missourians on abortion access and implementing earned sick leave.
HB 1 redraws Missouri’s Congressional map, not at the will of Missourians but at the will of the president and political elites in Washington, D.C. It will be called the “Missouri First” map by proponents, but we all know that this map puts Missouri last.
Instead of focusing on the issues that Platte Countians care about, like the skyrocketing cost of living and addressing educational challenges, the Republican Party is wasting taxpayer dollars to call back the General Assembly to strip the voices of all Missourians.
In November 2026, Platte Countians will have the chance to tell the General Assembly what they think of them wasting their hard-earned tax dollars.
