Was it a tornado? No conclusive evidence points that direction, but Friday afternoon’s storm in northern Platte County definitely left a path of destruction. The mid-afternoon event produced extremely high winds and some property damage. A car at a home off of E Hwy. a couple miles east of Camden Point was crushed by a large tree limb. A grain bin at the Perry Richardson Farm near Camden Point was virtually destroyed in the same storm. Power was knocked out for a while in some areas.
A man accused of driving drunk at a speed above 95 miles per hour is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a young Platte City woman. John A. McNamara, 27, a resident of Kansas City in Platte County, also faces a charge of assault for injuries he caused to another Platte City woman in the same crash. Killed in the two-car crash that occurred early Sunday morning was Abby Cockrill, 22, of Platte City. She was a passenger in a 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by Megan Wagoner, 22, of Platte City. Wagoner suffered injuries that the Highway Patrol classifies as minor. The wreck occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday as both vehicles were northbound on I-29 in Platte County near Tiffany Springs Parkway.
In a tax sale held early this week, Platte County recovered about half of what it was owed in delinquent property taxes. Sheila Palmer, the county’s assistant chief deputy, said it was a decidedly positive outcome.
