Dwayne Foley, 50 editor/owner of The Wathena Times and owner of The Landmark, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon of an apparent heart attack. Mr. Foley and Lester Shalz were in a car on I-29 when Foley was stricken. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a St. Joseph hospital. Born June 8, 1930 Cheyenne County, Kan., he was the son of Lawrence and Dora Hauser Foley. He married Ethel Mae Schuette, who survives, Dec. 29, 1951 in Spearville, Kan. Mr. Foley worked for several newspapers in western Kansas before purchasing The Wathena Times in 1959. In 1971 he purchased the Horton Headlight and in November 1979 he purchased The Landmark at Platte City.

Lines from Lucy column by Lucile Jones. “Dwayne Foley liked Platte City and its people. He learned to know a lot of people here in the short time he had to spend at The Landmark. He had high ambitions, plans and expectations for growth of The Landmark as well as Platte City. We are grateful for the years we knew him and that we could call him our friend. Our memories include dozens and dozens of stories that only Foley could see the light side in, of complicated incidents he had encountered.”
