Platte County R-3’s $5.48 million bond issue, which required a 4/7ths majority (57%) for approval, was defeated by around 40 votes at Tuesday’s general election. Final numbers showed 709 in favor and 605 opposed (just short of 54%). In the city of Platte City, two incumbents were voted out of office on the board of aldermen. Jim Palmer knocked off Diane Beck in ward three, with Palmer getting 76 votes to 47 for Beck. In ward two, challenger Shelle Browning also won by a relatively wide margin, getting 117 votes. Ron Porter was second in that race with 73 votes, while incumbent Randy Cannon was third with 55.
National Public Health Week is being observed April 3-7. Over the past year a great deal of attention has been focused on two critical public policy issues, health care reform and welfare reform. During much of these debates, little has been mentioned about public health and its role in today’s society.
