The uphill battle faced to bring a 650-plus home development north of Hwy. 92 and east of Platte City got a lot steeper last week. Developers of Lake at Tomahawke were denied by a unanimous vote by the Kansas City Missouri Planning Commission for a petition to be annexed by Kansas City. The commission went with the recommendation of the city’s staff in the denial. The 25 page report obtained by The Landmark lists several reasons why staff recommended the denial, including input from emergency responders. Police and fire departments said there are not currently resources to service the area.
Much of Platte City was without power for a good part of the day Monday. The driver of a dump truck mistakenly left the bed of his truck in the air while exiting the area near QuikTrip along Prairie View Road and the result was a snapped utility pole and downed power lines. Power was restored to the north side of town after about an hour but nearly everything south of the Platte County High School was without juice for several hours.
The City of Parkville has filed a lawsuit against three companies for damages suffered as a result of a collapsed retaining wall. In 2008 the city contracted with Miles Excavating to build a soil nailed retaining wall along Brink-Myer Road and Hwy. 45. In December of 2008 the wall was completed. On April 29 of this year a major portion of the wall collapsed.
