GET READ FOR A FALLING SNOW PARTY
On Thanksgiving Eve, there will be a Miracle on Main Street in Platte City.
The annual Holiday Lighting Celebration, typically Platte City’s largest event of the year, is set for the night before Thanksgiving. It’ll be held from 5-8 p.m. in Downtown Platte City on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Miracle on Main Street.’
Expect some ol’ favorites as well as some new activities at this year’s event, says Jamie Kacz. executive director of the Platte City Chamber of Commerce, the organization that sponsors the event.
“We have been busy elves planning this year’s holiday lighting,” Kacz told The Landmark this week.
Kacz said attendees should expect traditional activities such as horse drawn carriage rides, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a petting zoo, photo booth, train rides, balloon twisters, face painting, make-and- take crafts and much more.
Some new additions to the festivities have been added this year that could turn out to be hits with the crowd that gathers on the courthouse lawn in advance of the flipping of the switch for the Christmas lights on the Platte County Courthouse and downtown businesses along Main Street.
Two new activities are a falling snow dance party and a walk-in snow globe, and both will take place on the courthouse lawn.
“The snow will start falling when the lights get turned on,” Kacz said.
She said there will be two snow machines set up on the sides of the courthouse stairs that will create “a magical environment for all attendees to experience.”
Kacz said Howard Prost, DJ, will be playing holiday favorites and using visual effects to create a festive dance party.
She added that the walk-in snow globe “will be a perfect spot to take merry photos.”
Another change for this year is the addition of more community performances starting at 5 p.m. an hour before the holiday lights get turned on.
As for food options, there should be enough to fill any hungry bellies.
The firefighters of the Central Platte Fire Department at Second and Main will be cooking up chili and hot dogs, free to the community.
“We will have other businesses set up with candy, cookies, popcorn, cider and a hot chocolate bar,” Kacz explained.
“Sticker Stop” game boards for those interested in finding all the stops will be given away at the Chamber of Commerce office located at 620 Third Street just off of Main, at the firehouse, at the North Pole station, or at one of many businesses that will be open.
