Every time of the year has significant benefits. Everyone loves summer and being outdoors, having picnics. Even though the heat might get a little stifling here in the Midwest, I’d imagine most of us all like summer.
The holiday season is certainly fantastic. Gathering with families. Seeing the glow of magic in children’s eyes. And shoppers rushing home with their treasures.
February has Valentines Day. March and April have the true start of spring. May flowers bloom. Every time of the year has some amazing things going on.
But if you are a sports fan, there is NO time like October. While the Super Bowl is the big event in February. Opening Day in March and April. Basketball over the winter. The sheer volume of sports that overlap in October makes it the most incredible time of the year. For me, anyway.
And here in Kansas City? Oh man. This town seems to be built for October.
Let’s start with the Kansas City Current – who have only lost two matches all season. They are barreling toward the NWSL playoffs. They have some of the most dynamic players in the league in the only stadium purpose-built for women’s sports in the world.
Sporting Kansas City has not had a great year, but they are playing right now as well.
Your Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated (somehow) this season at 4-0 as of this writing. If they can make it through October with four more wins, folks can certainly start planning for another parade in February.
The Kansas City Royals are in the Wild Card round of MLB’s playoffs. While it’s not expected that they go deep in the playoffs, every prognosticator guaranteed they wouldn’t be here. So why not wreck some stuff?
And October is also the best time of year for college and high school sports as well. Girls softball, boys soccer, high school and college football, and girls and women’s volleyball are all overlapping on any given night in the city. The Northland is blessed with some of the best teams in all of these sports in the high school ranks. K-State, KU, and Missouri football programs are all playing beyond expectations so far. And let’s not forget Park University’s women’s volleyball program who continually find themselves competing for a title.
There are incredible sports to watch on TV every single night of the week. For those who might bet a couple of bucks on some of these games, there’s plenty of opportunities to lose that money every night as well.
Name a more entertaining time of the year. I’ll bet you cannot.
The message here is to make sure you dive into something this October. Some seasons are ending and some are just ramping up. But sports are one of the few things anymore that bring all of us together in these times and we should take advantage of it every year.
Happy October! Go sports!
